What is taping?

Both therapists at Osteobath are registered Kineso taping practitioners. Kinesio tape can be used on its own or as an adjacent therapy to osteopathy. It is a therapeutic rehabilitation tape that has been developed to aid the body’s natural healing mechanism.

What is kinesio tape?

Kinesio tape was developed in Japan by Dr Kenso Kase in the 1970s. The tape is latex-free, hypoallergenic and is made of an elastic cotton with an acrylic adhesive. The tape is designed to mimic human skin and this is where it differs from traditional zinc oxide tape. The tape is able to be stretched beyond its original length and thus helps support and stabilise your joints and muscles without restricting movement.

How does it work?

Following examination and diagnosis, our osteopaths will determine the level of tape tension and how it should be applied to the affected area of your body.  The tension of the tape helps to lift the skin which facilitates lymphatic drainage and thus reducing inflammation and alleviating pain and discomfort. As well as this circulatory affect, the tape also gives the area a sensory feedback which helps to improves posture and reduces the fear of movement.

Kinesio tape prolongs the effects of manual therapy meaning you will still be receiving the positive effects of your treatment long after you have left the clinic. The tape is usually left on the skin for around 3-4 days and can be worn when exercising, showering, bathing and swimming.

Who and which conditions may benefit from taping?

Although Keniso tape is frequently seen being used by professional athletes, it is safe and effective for anybody from children to geriatrics. Whether you’re a weekend warrior, training for the Bath half or just trying to get through the day, kinesio tape can help you.

Kineso tape can be used to help a variety of musculoskeletal conditions such as:

  • Muscles Strains

  • Joint Sprains

  • Repetitive Strain Injuries

  • Lower Back Pain

  • Sacroiliac Pain

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Plantar Fasciitis
